Word Imposter Game's online multiplayer mode lets everyone join on their own device using a shared room code. You can be in the same room or in different countries — the setup is identical either way, and the game runs completely in the browser. Here's the full process.
What You Need
- Each player needs a phone, tablet, or computer with a browser
- A group chat or video call for coordination and verbal discussion
- One person to create the room (the host)
No accounts, no downloads, no payment. The entire game runs at wordimpostergame.com in any browser.
Step 1: Host Creates the Room
Open wordimpostergame.com, tap Online Multiplayer, enter your name and choose an avatar, then configure the game settings — number of players, imposters, which categories to include, and whether the imposter gets a hint word. Tap Create Room. A 6-character room code appears on screen.
Step 2: Share the Code
Drop the code in your group chat, or use the Share Link button to generate a direct join URL. When someone clicks that link, the room code fills in automatically on their screen. Players open the site, choose Join Room, enter their name and the code, and they appear in the waiting room.
Step 3: Each Player Reveals Privately
Once the host starts the game, each player's device shows a private scratch card. They scratch it to reveal their role. Crewmates see the real word; the imposter sees a different word (or nothing, if you disabled hints). Nobody else can see another player's screen at this point.
Step 4: Run the Discussion on Your Video Call
This is where your video call (Zoom, Google Meet, FaceTime, Discord — anything works) does the work. Players take turns giving verbal clues. The game itself doesn't enforce speaking order, so decide in advance — clockwise around the video call grid, or alphabetical by first name.
After everyone has given a clue, open discussion happens verbally. Then everyone submits their vote in the game app simultaneously. The game tallies votes and reveals the result.
Tips for Smooth Online Sessions
- Set speaking order before round one — "we go left to right in the gallery view" prevents every round starting with "who goes first?"
- Use the discussion timer — set 2–3 minutes in the game settings. A countdown creates urgency and stops discussion from running indefinitely.
- Mute when not speaking — background noise on video calls obscures the hesitations and reactions that make the game fun.
- Play 4–6 rounds minimum — the game improves significantly as players start building reads on each other across multiple rounds.
Best Platforms for Video Call + Imposter Game
Discord is the best option if your group is comfortable with it. Audio quality is consistently good and there's no time limit. Google Meet has no time limit, requires no download, and works reliably in a browser tab alongside the game. Zoom's free tier has a 40-minute limit on group calls, which is usually enough for 2–3 rounds. FaceTime works well for smaller iPhone groups and supports up to 32 participants on newer iOS versions.
