What Is Word Imposter Game?
Word Imposter Game is a free social deduction word game for 3 to 15 players. Everyone in the group receives the same secret word — except one player, the Imposter, who gets a different word. The goal is simple: crewmates must identify the imposter through discussion, while the imposter must blend in without getting caught.
It's part of a popular genre of party games that test your ability to read people, give subtle clues, and stay calm under pressure. Think of it as a word-based version of Among Us or Werewolf.
Setting Up the Game
Choose Your Game Mode
Select Pass & Play if everyone is in the same room sharing one device — ideal for parties and family gatherings. Choose Online Multiplayer if players are in different locations, each on their own phone or computer.
Set the Number of Players & Imposters
Enter how many people are playing (3–15) and how many should be the imposter (1–3). For most groups, 1 imposter works best. With 8+ players, try 2 imposters for more chaos.
Pick Your Categories
Choose which word categories to play from — Animals, Food, Sports, Movies, and 16+ more. You can select all categories or limit to just a few. Hit Start Game when ready.
During the Game
Scratch Your Card
In Pass & Play mode, each player takes the device privately and scratches the card on screen to reveal their secret word. Crewmates see the real word. The imposter sees a different word (or nothing, depending on settings). Don't show anyone your card!
Give Clues in Speaking Order
A random player goes first. Going around the group, each person gives exactly one clue about their secret word. Your clue must prove you know the word without giving it away. Keep it vague enough to confuse the imposter, specific enough to signal you're a crewmate.
Discuss & Debate
After everyone has spoken, open discussion begins. Ask follow-up questions, point out inconsistencies, and defend yourself if accused. This is where the real game happens — watch for hesitation, generic clues, and players who avoid giving specifics.
Vote
When discussion ends, everyone votes simultaneously for who they think is the imposter. The player with the most votes is eliminated and revealed. If it's a tie, the imposter survives and wins.
Imposter's Last Chance
If the imposter is caught and the "Guess Word" setting is enabled, they get one final chance: guess the real word correctly to steal the win from the crewmates. They can use all the clues they heard to figure it out.
How to Win
Crewmates Win When...
The imposter is voted out AND they fail to guess the real word. Communication and paying attention to every clue is your best weapon.
Imposter Wins When...
Crewmates vote out the wrong person, OR the imposter correctly guesses the real word after being caught. Blending in and listening carefully is everything.
Pro Tips for Beginners
- Give specific-but-not-obvious clues — "four-legged" for a dog is too easy; "loyal" is just right.
- Watch for vague clues — imposters often give answers that could fit anything, like "big" or "popular".
- Go last if you can — you hear more clues to build on, making it easier to confirm the word.
- As the imposter, mirror others — if three people gave thematic clues, give one that fits the same theme.
- Don't be too perfect — a suspiciously confident imposter often gets caught faster than a nervous one.
